Our History
Odua Cooperative Conglomerate Limited is one of the most diversified and organised cooperative organisation in Africa. The umbrella of all cooperative movement in south-west of Nigeria. It is the largest in Nigeria and has its Precursor in the Old Cooperative Union of Western Nigeria (C.U.W.N) which emerged in 1952. This union was formed to coordinate the activities of all Cooperative Organizations in the old Western Region because of the belief of the then Western Regional Government under the leadership of the late Sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo that Cooperative could serve a potential for rural development. Consequently, the Government formulated constructive policies geared towards this goal.
As a beneficiary of these policies, the Cooperative Union of Western Nigeria was able to play a major role in the establishment of the Apexes such as the Association of Nigeria Exporters Limited, Cooperative Press Limited, Cooperative Transport Limited, Cooperative Supply Association and Cooperative Investment and Trust Society Limited. Earlier in 1968, the Cooperative Union of Western Nigeria had devolved her structure and businesses into the Cooperative Investment and Trust Society Limited. It also served as a rallying point for the movement in the newly created states of Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Ekiti.
The Cooperative Movement in the South West suffered a serious distress which was a result of leadership challenges that culminated into Management failures. Consequently, most of its apexes became moribund. It was in the light of this that the Cooperative Leaders in the South West of Nigeria took the decision to amalgamate all these apexes together under on umbrella in order to enable them survive in the highly competitive environment and to prevent a total loss of Cooperative businesses and identity or the extinction of the movement itself. Hence, the birth of Odua Cooperative Conglomerate Limited, which was registered on 26th of January, 2016.
This unpalatable situation notwithstanding, the spirit of Cooperators was never dampened. It is in view of this, that Cooperative Leaders met and unanimously took the historic decision to amalgamate. this will enable the Movement forge ahead to revamp the businesses or its Apexes. Cooperative Leaders are convinced that a centralized Board and Management will save cost, boost its businesses and make a return to past glory.
